OAKHAM- John F. Sokol, 88, of Ft. Pierce Florida passed away June 9, 2018.During the summer months he lived in Oakham, Mass. He was born in South Barre, MA one of seven sons of Alexander and Carolina Sokol. He was predeceased by his parents, one sister Sophie Jorczak, and five brothers: Stephen, Matthew, Edward, Francis and Stanley.
He is survived by his youngest brother Walter and wife Rosalie and many dear nieces and nephews. A graduate of Barre High School in 1947, he received his BA and MA degrees from American International College where he majored in mathematics and education. Graduate degrees included mechanical engineering, physics and mathematics at University of Hartford and Trinity College.
After 4 years with the US Air Force, he worked for the United Aircraft as an engineer then teaching full time at the University of Hartford, Western New England College Engineering School and Holyoke Community College where he was coordinator of the engineering department for the last 27 years of his teaching career. He enjoyed college teaching for nearly 40 years. During the summer, he was granted four NSF grants and College Operation Bootstrap at AIC from the US government.
John was a devout Catholic and was member of St. Anastasia Church in Florida and St Joseph’s Church in North Brookfield MA. His religious beliefs were the core of his daily life.
John enjoyed the competition of all sports—basketball and tennis were his favorites. He also played bridge for many years and did gardening and fishing in his spare time.
A calling hour will be held on Friday, June 22, 2018 from 9:30- 10:30 AM in Pillsbury Funeral Home, 44 Gilbert St. North Brookfield followed by the funeral Mass at 11:00AM in St. Joseph’s Church 296 N. Main St. N. Brookfield. Burial will be in St Joseph’s Cemetery in Barre. Contributions can be made in his name to St. Joseph’s Church 28 Mt.Pleasant St. North Brookfield, MA.01535.
