Obituary for Cheryl A Latka (Farrell)

HARDWICK— Cheryl (Farrell) Latka, formerly of Barre, died suddenly at home Sunday, November 18, 2018.  She was born in Worcester on April 8, 1957.  After graduating high school, Cheryl pursued her childhood dream of becoming a veterinary technician.  She graduated from Becker College in 1978.  Soon after graduating, she worked at the University of Massachusetts in the Dept. of Anesthesiology for 13 years as a Senior Research Scientist.  There, she was instrumental in developing a small animal model for the placement of chronic spinal and epidural catheters, which was funded by Astra Pharmaceuticals.  She was also tasked in writing the materials and methods section of the Association for Academic Surgery Annual Meeting, Critical Care Medicine, Regional Anesthesia, and Anesthesiology.Upon leaving the University of Massachusetts, Cheryl taught operating room conduct and aseptic techniques to students at Becker College.  She then broadened her skills and took a position as a veterinary technologist at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine.  There she diversified herself, not only treating the hospitalized patients, but also teaching third and fourth year veterinary students' techniques that they would utilize throughout their careers.

In 2003, she earned her license from the National Veterinary Board in Virginia to practice as a Veterinary Technologist.  She spent eight years as Head Technician in Emergency and ICU.  There she became very proficient in emergency medicine and also instructed and taught interns how to diagnose and treat emergencies.  Cheryl had worked in all of the avenues in the veterinary community from research to emergency medicine; emergency medicine was by far where she was the happiest.

Cheryl also wrote a column for the Barre Gazette called, “Pet Care Tips”.  She had hopes of writing a memoir about her years of experiences as a veterinary technician.  She began composing her book, but sadly, her memories were not documented in time.  Until her death, Cheryl remained an active member of the VA Licensed Veterinary Technologist Association, International Veterinary Emergency Critical Care Society, Nature Conservancy, National Wildlife Federation, Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association, and the Association of Pet Loss & Bereavement.

Cheryl leaves behind her former husband, Edward J. Latka and their loving daughter Sarah F. Latka both of Barre, both of whom she had very fond memories.  She leaves behind her two sisters, Trish Azzarone of Paxton, MA and Cynthia Farrell-Whitehead and her husband Gordan Whitehead of Worcester; two brothers, David Farrell and his wife, Irene of Palm City, FL; and Michael Farrell of Worcester.  She also leaves her God Daughter, Farrell Ford and her husband Daniel and her great nieces Tessa and Stella.  She also leaves her Uncle, Rob Butts and four loving cousins, Stephanie, Eli, and Michael Karnes of IL and Marc Karnes of PA, as well as many nieces and nephews.

As a very young child, Cheryl had a deep compassion and love for animals of all kinds and most importantly, she had deep respect and admiration for them; no matter the species and no matter living or deceased.  Animals never ceased to amaze her.  She viewed animals to be similar to that of an infant and she was the voice that would speak for them.  Her life-long mission was to make certain that all species were treated with love, patience, understanding, and compassion.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday, November 27, 2018 from 11:00 am-12:30 pm in Pillsbury Funeral Home . There will be a remembrance service at 12:30 pm.  Burial will be in Saint Joseph’s Cemetery in Barre.  A memorial service will be held at Our Lady of The Rosary Church, 23 Fales St. Worcester, MA on June 30, 2019. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, Epilepsy Foundation, or any ASPCA or other pet care organizations of your choice.
