BARRE — John “Jack” Cranston, 84, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Monday, November 19, 2018 at Neighborhood Hospice in West Chester, Pennsylvania, after a lengthy illness.

Born in Ware and raised in Barre, he was the son of the late Joseph and Imelda (McEvoy) Cranston. A baseball and basketball player at Barre High School, Jack graduated in 1952. He then spent two years at the College of the Holy Cross before embarking on two years of service in the U.S. Army that included a stint as a radio operator in Germany.

He then returned to Holy Cross, where he earned a business degree in 1959. After beginning his work career in Chicago, Jack returned to his hometown and opened the Cranston Insurance Agency, which he ran until selling the company in 1982. He later worked for the Massachusetts Department of Revenue until his retirement in 1996. Jack also spent many years as a tax preparer.

An avid golfer, Jack met the former Patricia Murdock at Petersham Country Club and they married in 1972. They had three children, and Jack was a regular at their games, concerts and plays. In retirement, he enjoyed traveling and spending time with his grandchildren. Late in life, he dealt with the effects of dementia with patience and grace with his wife by his side.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, son Mike Cranston of Atlantic City, New Jersey, daughter Nancy Hoyer and her husband, Gustav, of Fort Collins, Colorado, daughter Beth Sinkus and her husband, Paul Jr., of West Chester, Pennsylvania, and seven grandchildren: Nicholas, Gretchen, Lillian, Gabriel and Kurt Hoyer and Meghan and Thomas “T.J.” Sinkus.
