Obituary for Michael F Sosik Jr.

CHARLTON- Michael F. Sosik, Jr., 72, died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on October 27, 2016, after a courageous six-month battle with brain cancer.

He leaves his wife of 53 years, Doris (Berry) Sosik and his four children: Heidi M.Sosik and her husband Daniel Kilfoyle of Falmouth, Michael J. Sosik and his wife Christine, Amy F. Sosik and her husband Scott Martin, and Matthew S. Sosik and his wife Janice, all of Sturbridge. He also leaves 14 well-loved grandchildren and his mother-in- law, Leona Berry, whom he adored.

He was born in Norristown, PA, on November 11, 1943, the son of Michael F. Sosik, Sr. and Bertha (Knoebel) Sosik and moved to Sturbridge in 1969 where he became actively involved in his new community. He was a volunteer firefighter and EMT, a member of the Optimist Club, and a co-founder of Sturbridge Pop Warner football. He could always be counted on to volunteer in any way that benefited Sturbridge schools. For many years he had the great pleasure of being Charlton’s town Santa.

Michael was the CEO of Northeast Merchant Systems, Sturbridge, until his retirement three years ago. He was also a licensed charter boat captain out of York,Maine, and he enjoyed every moment he spent on or near the ocean. He was the president of the Northeast Charterboat Captains’ Association and was their representative on the New England Fishery Management Council for many years.

He proudly served his country in Korea with the 1 st Cavalry Division as a helicopter gunner and chaplain’s assistant. He was a skilled mason and carpenter as well as an accomplished cook and baker. He loved baking breads for his friends and family. He also enjoyed playing the guitar and loved the theater and folk concerts which he generously supported.

Michael will be greatly missed by his friends and family. We will all miss his hearty laugh and sense of humor.

Please join the family for a celebration of his life at LaSalle Hall, 444 Main Street, Southbridge, MA on November 11, 2016, from 4 to 7 p.m. Donations may be made to Boston Children’s Hospital, a cause near and dear to him and his family.
