Obituary for Sheila M Mackinnon (Reed)

HARDWICK-Sheila Mary Mackinnon,85, passed away peacefully in her home on Friday, February 3, 2017 after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis. She was the beloved wife of Norman Mackinnon, to whom she had been married for 61 years and devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother (“gate gamma”). Sheila fully understood the irreversible and inevitable nature of her illness, yet through it all she kept a cheerful outlook and a lively interest in a wide range of topics of interest and importance. She avoided talk about herself or her health problems, preferring to focus on others and their lives.

Sheila was born on January 3, 1932, in Manhattan, NY. and was raised in Chatham, NJ. and Rochester, NY. Growing up, she enjoyed visiting her relatives in Brookfield, Vermont, the scene of her fondest childhood memories. She was a graduate of the University of Vermont and was proud of her Yankee heritage as well as her close ancestral ties to the Samuel Adams family of revolutionary war fame.

Sheila and Norman lived most of their lives in Sudbury, MA where she was a skilled writer and reporter for local newspapers and travel magazines and a real estate agent for several years. Later in their retirement, she and Norman moved to Hardwick, MA.

Sheila had a love of architecture and history and was an active member of the Hardwick and Sudbury historical societies. Throughout her life, she was a staunch and passionate supporter of environmental and progressive causes and instilled her strong values in her children and grandchildren, never leaving any doubt where she stood.

In addition to her husband, Sheila is survived by two sons, Neil and his wife Susan of Chelmsford, MA, and Craig of Amherst, MA and her daughter, Celia Mackinnon of Belchertown, MA. She is survived by her grandchildren Nathan, Owen, and Cassie Mackinnon, Sean Hennessey, Hailey Fleury, and Kelsey and Evan Brown, as well as her great-grandson Mark Charles Sides, Jr.

A service in celebration of her life will be held Saturday, February 18, 2017 at 11:00 AM in First Universalist Church, 9 Ruggles Hill Road in Hardwick.
