Obituary for Charles G Allen IV

BARRE- Charles G. Allen, IV - died quietly on June 29,2017 at the age of 86. His wife of 59 years, Alice Rinehart Allen, died in 2014. Mr. Allen was born in Worcester on December 30, 1930, son of Charles G. Allen, Jr. and Gladys Howland Allen. He is survived by 5 sons, Charles G. Allen V, Michael W. Allen, James H. Allen, John H. Allen, William R. Allen and their families including ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He also leaves a sister, Gladys Jeanne Allen.

After graduating from Dartmouth College, Charles joined the United States Army and proudly served in the 45th infantry division during the Korean War. Following the war, he returned to Barre and spent his career working at the Chas. G. Allen Co., Inc., eventually retiring as general manager. He actively held many leadership roles in local service organizations including The American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and The Korean War Veterans Association.

Charlie had a passion for showing his award winning morgan horses. He was a dedicated historian with specific interest in U.S. and local history. In 2011 he sponsored the Barre Historical Society’s Allen Gallery which houses historical artifacts and exhibits of local industries.

A lifelong resident of Barre, Charlie served the youth of his community as a member of the Quabbin Regional School Committee and sponsoring a little league baseball team. For many years he was a trustee of Barre Savings Bank.

A graveside service will be held on July 9,2017 at 11:00am in Glen Valley Cemetery Valley Rd. Barre. Charlie requested that in lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Barre Historical Society, Po. Box 766 and the American Legion Post 2, Po Box 537 Barre, MA 01005.Pillsbury Funeral Home 96 S.Barre Rd. Barre is directing arrangements.
