Obituary for James W Allen

BROOKFIELD- James W. Allen ,81, died peacefully March 22, 2018 after a long illness. He was the son of Clarence and Annie (Mundell) Allen and a lifelong resident of Brookfield. He was predeceased by his wife Kathleen (Martin) Allen. Jim leaves his children Karen Waterman (Richard) of Barrington, RI, Kevin Allen (Christina) of Westerly, RI and Lara Allen of Astoria,NY and 5 grandchildren Kelsey, Erika, Kyle (Allen), Sam and Jill (Waterman).

Jim was a native of Brookfield and president of the last class to graduate from Brookfield High School. After graduating from college and serving in the Navy, he entered the teaching profession and taught math at Tantasqua Regional High School from 1963-1999. He was the head of the Math Department, and held many positions over the years including coaching the basketball, football and baseball teams.

Jim was also very generous with his time serving the town he loved. He served as Selectman from 1976 to 1977 and again from 2005 to 2011. He also served as Town Moderator for 26 years from 1978-2004. In addition, he served on dozens of committees including the Water Board, Historical Commission, By-Laws Committee, Quaboag Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Cable Access Advisory. All together he had over fifty years of community service in town.

He loved traveling the back roads of New England, sports and willing to drive anywhere to see anything to do with trains.

He lived his life grateful for his family, friends and the town he loved. He genuinely tried to give of himself to make the world around him a better place, and was loved by anyone who came to know him. He never sought any acknowledgement for his years of service and he had a sense of duty as a citizen to do his part. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him and leaves behind a legacy in those he taught and loved.

Friends and family are invited to attend calling hours on Wednesday, March 28,2018 from 5-7PM in Pillsbury Funeral Home 3 West Brookfield Rd. Brookfield. The funeral will be held on Thursday at 10:00AM in the Brookfield Congregational Church 8 Common St.Brookfield. Burial will follow in Brookfield Cemetery.
