BROOKFIELD- Wilfred Arthur Steadman, 89, passed away after an extended illness on Monday, March 16, 2020, with friends and family at his side.

Born in Ware, Massachusetts, son of Clayton Bostwick Steadman, and Hilda (Nelson) Steadman, he grew up in Brookfield, then lived for many years in Holden, Mass, along with his wife Barbara, until moving back to Brookfield in 1985.  Wilfred first met Barbara when he was four years old.

Wilfred attended Brookfield High School and the University of Massachusetts, graduating with a degree in chemistry, which he used to obtain a job with Allied Chemical in Virginia. After several years, he decided that he would bring his young family back to Massachusetts, where he worked as a Manufacturing Engineer for Norton Company for 35 years. He retired from Norton Company in 1987.

He served as Treasurer and member of The Friends of the Merrick Memorial Library in Brookfield, and was a former board member, Treasurer and life member of the Quaboag Historical Society. He received the Quaboag Historical Society’s Lucy Stone Award for his community service. He served for 15 years on the Brookfield Conservation Commission and as Chairman.   And he also served as Treasurer for the Brookfield Fund, and enjoyed working with other charities to help less fortunate people in the area.

Among all of his other activities, he was a life member of the National Rifle Association, Gun Owners Action League, and other sporting organizations. He enjoyed rifle, shotgun, pistol and silhouette competition, and was active at the Hamilton Rod and Gun Club until the past few years.

When he moved back to Brookfield, he spent several years renovating Barbara’s parent’s house, an old farmhouse, to modernize it while still retaining much of its original character.

Wilfred is survived by his son, Dana Steadman, and daughter-in-law, Rebecca Coover Steadman, of Wexford, PA; grandson, Andrew Steadman, and his wife, Alexandra Paez, of Delray Beach, FL; and granddaughter, Molly Steadman, of Cleveland, OH. He was preceded in death by his wife Barbara Sheldon Steadman, and by his brother John Cardell Steadman, and sister Phyllis Carolyn Bennet Duval.
